Song: Brand New - Jude Law And A Semester Abroad

Right so I finally moved in. Keep meaning to update this, and forgetting. I've yet to complete Washing Machine 101, that will have to be addressed some time this week.

I've currently got a bit of a jimmy-rigged wireless setup, using my Linux machine, with a crossover cable to my laptop which is connected to the wireless network. Hopefully going to get a wireless card that'll work on Linux from Rob at some point.

Anyway, need to go dry my hair. Just thought I'd update!

Song: Fightstar - Paint Your Target

I've now updated my Sudoku game. It's no longer using the standard Javascript input and alert boxes. I feel it' quite an improvement in terms of appearance and maybe usability. Functionally though it's still the same. Turns out actually it's not due until the end of May so my rush was for nothing. Oh well. Done it now.

I'm about to go out now and sign the contract for the house rental. Exciting times.

Saturday 17th March 2007

So, late last night I suddenly found some coursework for one of my modules that's due in a week or so which was actually set on 2nd of this month. So, this morning I woke up quite early and got straight on to it.

The task was to make a sudoku game in a webpage, using Javascript and all the DOM jazz that it can do. I've only very briefly done that before, and wasn't sure how to attach event handlers to Javascript created objects. But, I got into it... Anyway, it's not 1am and I've just finished it! Not bad for a month long bit of coursework. Anyway, bragging aside I would like people to use it to find out how many things are broken on it. I've not tested it in Explorer, so Firefox users only please. I'm sure it looks awful and probably doesn't even work on Explorer.

Anyway... Sudoku!

Report bugs!

Song: Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You

More procrastination, yay. I'm now actually doing uni work. I'm using Doxygen to generate source code documentation for my final year project. It seems to work very nicely. I'm quite pleased with it. Even more pleasingly is that there's a gui for Mac OS X for it.

So tonight gave us Comic Relief's "The Apprentice". I quite got into the last proper series of The Apprentice, but actually the real reason I was quite looking forward to this one, was because Cheryl from Girls Aloud was in it. What I didn't know at the time was that Trinny, of "Trinny and Susannah" was also there. I used to not be able to stand them, but I've since come around. So yes, Cheryl clearly way out of her depth, didn't really do a lot. She was though dressed rather well and her teeth were white as ever. So that's good. Trinny got a bit more involved, and I was quite pleased to see she can survive without Susannah. I also quite like how she calls everyone "darling". Uhm, what a rubbish paragraph.

Oh! We've finally got a date for them to do our broken ceiling from where the tree came through. Only been two months... Thank the lord we were a "priority". Annoyingly it's being done in three steps with gaps in betwen. First they're removing the built in wardrobe, then going away for a few days, then coming back to remove the cancerous ceiling, then leaving the room with no ceiling for a few more days, to finally come back to put a new ceiling up. I think it will be quite strange to be in there with no ceiling. Especially as the roof overhead has holes in still. It's going to be fun. Actually writing it like that makes me think it's all a bit shambolic... Oh well. At least they're finally starting to do it. I just dread to think how many more months before they'll fix our roof, straighten up our bent pillar, glue (apparently) the huge crack in our neighbours wall, and replace our driveway (it now has a huge crack and numerous little craters). Ooh, the tree woe... Here's a reminder.

I actually quite like that picture. :)

Song: Daivid Ford - Goodnight Saigon

Surprise surprise, the menu didn't work in Internet Explorer. It's so frustrating! Any time you try and do something remotely interesting on a web page you have to then break it to get it to work. I know there's a few little problems with this site in Explorer, but I completely lost interest in fixing them.

So, it's gone midday now. I've been up since 9:30, not done any project work at all. Finding all sorts of reasons to procrastinate. :)

Song: Panic! At The Disco - The Only Difference Between Martyrdom And Suicide Is Press Coverage

I quite like that song title. :)

I feel I've had quite a productive day. I got up too early this morning, so killed some time before finally going to Godalming for a follow up chat about this job. It again went very well. Hopefully should help fund this leaving home endeavour.

I then came home for a rushed lunch before heading off to Kingston to James' house. I was going to drop off the tenants application form, and my guarantor form to the estate/letting agent people. There seemed to be no problems with the forms, so we left there quite quickly. Hoping everything will go alright now. Then back to James', where I got involved in helping with the Kingston Uni LGBT society's website. Tonight I've been working on a nice little drop down menu using CSS. I think it's quite nice now it's done.

I've not done anything for my final year project in ages. I feel like I'm neglecting it a little. I should probably do something tomorrow. I feel really knackered now though. Early night, maybe.

Song: David Ford - There Is A Light

So, I think most people know by now, but I'm planning on moving out in the near future. James' fourth house mate is due to leave, and so he extended the offer to me. Got to sort out a bunch of quite scary forms and stuff first, but hopefully it will all go well! I will be insanely poor for a few months, but I think I've got a job lined up already, which is handy. More on this later.

Last night I drove up there, and as an experiment, James and I exchanged keys and moved each others' car. I was a little cautious, as I didn't want to upset lil' Sash, but I politely waited for her glow plug light to go out, and then fired her up. I just couldn't believe how heavy the steering was! I'm a little spoilt, and have never had a go in a car without power steering, including all the cars like this that I've just moved about, rather than having driven properly. But Christ, my frail little arms really weren't enjoying the challenge. I ended up making a simple manoeuvre take quite a bit longer than it needed, but it did serve as a handy exercise for if we ever need to move each others' cars in the future.

So yes, this job. Long story short, a lecturer at uni somehow knows this company who needed someone to do some Java programming for them. Lecturer from uni remembered me, presumably from the sat nav thing Tor and I made in our second year, and I had him in semester one this year too. So I went to meet with this company on Thursday, and it all seemed to go quite well. Going back in two weeks to discuss things in more detail, including financial matters. Hoping that goes well!

I finally got rid of my Fender strat, I now have £200 in £20 notes sitting here for it. Someone from Knaphill found it on ebay and wanted it, so because it was convenient I took it off ebay and just let her have it. It's not really worth much more than that, and I really didn't want someone miles away to win it and then make me post it. So that was handy. Could do with selling a few more things, but not really sure what yet. That reminds me, I think my dad owes me >£150. I should find out about that...

Friday 2nd March 2007

So, I have an audible treat to share. After hearing Daniel play it on piano years ago, I thought it sounded rather lovely, and then David Ford did it on guitar at M&C, which in turn brought to my attention that it's in "the big red book". So I set about working it out on piano, using only the book of guitar chords, and got the gist of it. Then Daniel filled in a few blanks for me, as he had learnt it properly in years past. So here it is, recorded in one take (though admittedly took several attempts)... Everyone's favourite Celine Dion song, done on piano by me! My Heart Will Go On! Rock.
